I just bought a 1991 Geo Metro Convertible and the previous owner modified the original 1.0 liter engine and now it outputs 100 horsepower, it is soo much fun to drive and I love how small and quick it is now.

We still have thousands of these running on Hungarian roads. Not the convertible one, but the original Suzuki Swifts. They were made in Esztergom Hungary between 1992 and 2003 and they are still the most reliable cheap used cars today because there is really nothing that can go wrong in them. And if something does go wrong it's easy and cheap to repair.

"A new owners manual for the convertible" ha ha ha ha ha ha, you know what a convertible is or used to be? its a stock car that has had the roof cutout, reinforced on select parts of the car,it has a motor and hoses plus lifting rams (where applicable) for the top and some odds and ends changed that are not pertinent to the consumer, all the consumer needs is a supplement that tells him how to operate the manual, 2 pages at most, why print a whole new manual?

How about the Geo Spectrum? I have only seen one in my entire life, and it was owned by the parents of a highschool buddy back in the day. It was a 1989 model with a really tiny 4-pot. I wanna say it was a 1.5L, may have been a 1.3L, but it was really small and not very fast.

I had the hardtop version of this car and it went 100k miles with only oil changes, brakes, and plugs. It had a manual transmission and it was so light that the 53 HP was not a problem. I drove to freaking Oregon from California in this car, with a passenger. So don't be hating, Dough. Yes, the 'h' was intentional. Notice what other word it looks like? As someone pointed out, Doug needs to think more about the working people who own things like this and made them last 10 years with hardly any maintenance. Nothing wrong with this car.

I had the, uh, lovely experience of having the hatchback version of one of these as a rental while my main ride was being repaired. I departed from Meridian, Mississippi on I-20/59 heading back towards Alabama and... it took me a whole two and a half minutes to achieve Interstate speeds (back then? still 55, y'all), all the while getting to feel that ridiculous little car getting bounced around by the air coming off the big-rigs and even mere full-size passenger cars that were zooming past me as though I were standing still.

This was my first car! I owned a 1993 Geo Metro LSI convertible. I LOVED that car, and back when gas was .93 cents a gallon, I’d literally go weeks without having to refill! It had a CD player, 5-speed, and I put brand spanking new speakers in it. Drove that little eye catcher until my freshman year in college.
Talk all the smack ya want, even as an Acura/Honda enthusiast now, I can honestly say that no other car I ever owned was as good on a snowy day! ❤️Geo Metro❤️

I had a hard top when I was young. I drove it from Ocean Beach CA to the Missippi several times..one time through Kansas i got 70 MPG on a tank of gas. It would cost $13 to drive to Vegas and back! My wife got it in the divorce and told me she put over 300 K on it before she sold it.This put a smile on my face.

The plastic key was not often given from the factory at that time. Still I remember going to the auto show and the CAA was giving away free copies of your car key made of plastic. I kept mine in my wallet and it came in handy a few times. The plastic key would not start my car but it would open the door. I test drove one of those cars new and took it to a very short steep hill on a gravel road . The car had three people in it and it did not make it up the hill. I did not buy it. I bought a Plymouth Sundance after doing the same test and it passed. A guy I worked with bought one of those and he had a family I think three kids plus a wife. He told me the car was way under powered when he had his family in it so he had to just not take them in the car. Poor guy that was their only car

My mom had a 95 Metro. On the highway it was absolutely terrible but around town it's still one of the most fun cars I've driven apart from the lack of power steering. Being able to drive a car super aggressively, flooring it all the time, without it getting you into any trouble is a different experience.

Even if hilariously, pathetic, unsafe, slow... the interior plastic and materials still looks way, way, way better than the actual FIAT Tipo / Dodge Neon. Never driven in my life such a bad vehicle, and at the time my daily car (and yardstick) was a '02 Polo with finished shock absorbers. I've not driven yet Dacias or DRs or Mahindras, so maybe there's something even much more terrible on the road, but I still haven't found something with more awful interior plastics. Litterally, they're horrible to the sight and touch, and the interior styling isn't better.
I would suggest, if you think that this Metro convertible is made of garbage, the review of the FIAT 600 (was sold until 2010) but I think that's not avaible in the US (what a pity lol), so... try the Tipo/Neon. Please. It could be the most hilarious and funny review of all the times. X"D

Jesus, Doug. What a mean spirited hatchet job. This episode of your knowledgeable but tiresome site really reminded me why I stopped watching you 3 or 4 years back. Back then, you wore me out with your take-no-prisoners narrative style. I have a son about your age, and he talks like you when he's with his mountain biking or rock climbing buddies — fast and staccato, sentences running into each other, virtually daring you to try to unpack it on the fly. But he is very fluent in the dominant dialect of North American English — the upper midwest/upper plains/west coast dialect, the dialect which connotes education and power. He slips between them seamlessly. Can you?
Now, moving from the quirks and idiosyncracies of the Doug DeMuro, it's time to talk about the deficiencies in content. You seem intent on slandering this car with as much low quality sarcasm as you can fit between run-on sentences. Yeah, this car is cheap, made with the lowest quality materials Suzuki could find. But Doug, there are people out there who don't have the option to buy a Land Rover Defender to supplement their Mercedes AMG E-class Estate wagon. Some people back in 1992 were trying to support themselves and their 2 year old with a $6.50/hour minimum wage job in San Diego, commuting daily from Chula Vista. I mean — What ya gonna do when the Lambo is in the shop, eh?
Alright, I'm done. Maybe I'll check in again in a few years when the algorithm shoves another of your socially unaware messes under my nose. Until then, AMF.

Grandma, please forgive me for this… my grandma had this same year and model car. The only difference was that hers was fire engine red. On August 5th 1993, my grandma and her sister were driving her Metro to go buy seeds to plant in her garden. They had the top down and was listening to some rap song by a group name 2 Live Crew. My grandma was driving around 48MPH when a tow truck ran a light. Unfortunately my grandmother ran straight into the tow truck drivers door. My grandma sister said she blacked out for a quick second but when she came through my grandmother wasn’t there. She thought maybe she was seriously hurt and in the ambulance already. At that time my aunt didn’t know she was only out for less than 2 minutes. As my aunt got out the car, she looked 3 cars back and saw my grandmother sitting on top of someone’s Mercedes Benz 560 SEL hood. What happened was when the inflated restraint (airbag) popped out, it knocked my grandma out the car. Luckily she was still buckled in the seat when the airbag knocked her out of the car. . The cop said that’s what saved her life. The car was unfortunately totaled but my grandma did bring the seat back home. She had the seat towed from the accident scene. It’s in the garage today. We sit on it when there’s no more folding chairs at the family reunions.

    I had a 1990 Geo Metro Hatchback.
It was a tin can on wheels. I had a 5 speed stick but on the highway I was getting 60mpg ! Yes that’s right and 45-50 in the city !! I traded it in with 130,000 miles on it, it required no repairs!!
Except oil changes and one coolant change that was it ! Never needed anything not even brakes ! This was the most cost effective car I ever owned 👍 great for parking in the city this car always started and I gave others jump starts in the cold Chicago winters. Nothing ever broke on this car never rusted out either.

I had a 1986 Chevy Sprint, 3 cylinder and automatic (concession to my new wife), the first new car I ever bought! It was a 5-door, red, and it was a surprisingly (except that it was Japanese) good car. It was also a direct predecessor to the Geo Metro (and probably the better car). I sold it 7-8 years later with ~130K on the clock and developing transmission problems. All told, it was a GREAT cheap car. If I needed a cheap car again today, I wouldn't mind another one of these!
